Syracuse Critter Tip of the Month

About the opossum, appearance, life cycle, habitat, biology and behavior
The opossum is scientificallycalled Didelphimorphia and it is a marsupial that is the largest withinthe western hemisphere. The biology is unspecialized and the diet veryflexible. Theirreproductive habits have made them quite successful as colonizers and they survive in verydiverse conditions and locations.

Reproduction and the life cycle
The opossum has got a reproductive system that includes a uterus that is divided and a pouch. The estrous cycle is around 28b days and they do have a placenta which is short lived and very simple in its structure. The young are also born at an early stage but the gestation period is the same as that of other small marsupials which is at around 12-14 days. After birth, the young one has to find its way into the marsupial which holds them as they nurse. The female usually give birth to many young ones and most may fail to attach to teats. However, around 13 may be able to make it and they survive depending on the species. They get weaned in only 70-125 days. The lifespan is also quite short.

The behavior
Opossums ate nomadic and solitary. They stay in a single area for as long as they have water and food. There are families that will group together in burrows or under houses. They do not put effort to build their own burrows but rather prefer the ones that have ben abandoned. They like the dark and secure areas. When the opossum feels threatened, they play possum where theymimic the smell and appearance or a sick or even dead animal. This is apsychological response that is not voluntary, just like fainting.

The habitat
Opossums may be found in Meso America up to North America and into Syracuse NY. They are a rather invasivespecies in British Columbia and southern Ontario.

Appearance
The adult opossum is around 24 to 40 inches in length. The tail is around 10-12 inches and is included in the overall length. Their weigh is around 4-12 pounds and the males are much larger than females. Their body fur is dark gray or even white gray or under fur which is black ordarkbrown. It has five toes and the first toe of the hind foot doesn't have a claw and it is opposable just like a thumb. Their eras are lathe and black and the eyes small. The faces are covered with white fur.
