Seattle Critter Tip of the Month

What diseases do raccoons carry? While you may think that a raccoon is a cute, cuddly animal, the fact is that these animals carry a whole lot of diseases and parasites that can be quite dangerous to the health of you and your family. Some you can contract simply by breathing in the organisms near the waste of the raccoon. This makes these animals very dangerous to be around.

This sounds crazy in some ways, but it is true. If you are interested in knowing what kinds of diseases these animals carry, here are some of the more common ones.

Raccoon roundworm is the most common of these. There are actually two different strains of this disease, but both are quite dangerous. The common symptoms include such things as loss of vision, tiredness, loss of muscle control and coma. This disease is airborne, meaning you can breathe it in simply by being around the raccoon waste. This attacks the central nervous system and can lead to death.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can be contracted by coming in contact with raccoon feces or urine. The disease is transmitted by these wastes coming into contact with an open sore or cut. Common symptoms of the illness include nausea, diarrhea, anemia, a high fever, sever aches, and liver or kidney failure. This can also be a deadly disease if not treated right away.

Salmonella is most commonly thought of when you are talking about food poisoning, but you can get the salmonella bacteria from ingestion as well. This usually occurs by coming in contact with the raccoon and then transferring the bacteria from touching the food. One can also get this disease by eating raccoon that is not properly prepared. The common symptoms include a greatly elevated fever, severe abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Rabies can also be contracted from a raccoon. Getting bitten or scratched by the raccoon can easily pass the disease on, and cause serious problems for you. The common symptoms of rabies include foaming at the mouth, inability to walk without stumbling (look very much like a drunk), acts of violence or violent outbursts, and lack of fear. If not treated right away this is a lethal disease and the period until death is brutal. This is one of the worst diseases a person can contract.

While this is by no means a comprehensive list, it gives you a clear idea that these are not cuddly animals you want to take home. Avoid the raccoons at all costs.
