How to keep raccoons out of a chicken coop? Raccoons are true omnivores, which means that they will eat anything. Truly they will eat just about anything that they can get their mouths on. This is why they are happy to roam through your garbage cans, because one mammal's trash is another mammal's tasty morsel. This is just how these creatures are.

One of the things they will get to if they have the opportunity is your chickens. They do not necessarily want to eat the chickens or the chicks, which they will, but mostly want the eggs. Raccoons love eggs, and if given the chance to get them they will eat that above virtually anything else. This makes keeping them away from your chicken coup absolutely imperative.

The problem with a raccoon is that they can get around many forms of defense that you would normally employ. You cannot just put up a fence because they can dig under many of them, unless you take special measures. You can't simply put up chicken wire because these crafty animals can get into many things if they have the time to do so. This requires a little bit of craftiness of your own.

To begin you are going to want to make sure that the chickens are securely in the chicken coup at night time. Raccoons forage for food at night, so you want to keep the chickens penned up so that they cannot be reached. This means you need to ensure that the coup is built to be about three feet off of the ground. This will keep it out of the reach of the raccoons. Ensure that boards are nailed and sealed properly so that one cannot be pulled open. If you have a plank leading into the coup take that down at night so it cannot be used for access. Make sure that windows and doors are closed securely as well.

You should have a fence around the area to keep the coup penned in as well. The fence should be at least four feet high, and should not have any low hanging branches that can be used to climb on and get into the area. Make sure that the fence is at least 12 inches into the ground. Raccoons are very adept at digging, and so you want to make sure that the fence is deep enough into the ground to keep them from digging under. Put rocks around the fence line to make it harder to dig.
