Greenville Critter Tip of the Month

How to get raccoons out of the attic - So you have discovered that you have raccoons in your attic. My condolences! You have some work ahead of you now my friend. Raccoons are a complete nightmare for your home for several reason, most importantly because they create a ridiculous mess and secondly because they are disease carriers.

They may look cuddly and sweet, but raccoons make a ridiculous mess wherever they go. They dig into everything, they lay their waste wherever they want, and they tear up anything in their pathway that suits their needs. On top of that they carry some of the worst diseases and those diseases easily pass on to humans. They include such things as rabies and parasites that can seriously endanger your family. It is clear if you have a raccoon in your attic that they need to go.

The first place to begin is by finding the means that they are using to get into your home. Make sure that when you are looking that you do a complete and thorough look around the house. Some people make the mistake of finding the first spot and thinking their work is done. Make sure there are no others.

If you find more than one, close off the others so that there is only one exit point for the raccoon. This will make the process much easier once you have scared the raccoon out. Ensure that the hole, loose board, or other issue is securely fastened. If it is a whole we recommend you putting steel wool inside the hole to keep the raccoon from trying to dig his or her way right back in.

Once you have ensured that there is just one way in or out, your next step is to get the raccoon to flee. This is done by startling the raccoon. The way to do that is to wait until it is getting dark. Before it gets dark put a large light inside the attic that will illuminate the entire area. We also recommend putting a radio you can turn on loud in there as well.

As it gets to dusk crank on the light and the loud music. Ensure, when you do so that the access way from the attic into the house is closed. The sound will startle the raccoon who will fly to the comfort of the darkness outside. Once the raccoon is gone, go outside and seal that whole well. Ensure that it cannot be breeched. Now all you have to do is cleanup.
