Greensboro Critter Tip of the Month

How to keep squirrels out of my garden - You have spent all summer building an amazing garden that is full of incredible fruits and vegetables. Carrots, celery, watermelon, beans, and the like will make great meals and treats for you, and there is no doubt that you have to be excited about crunching into those foods.

You are not the only one who feels that way however. Squirrels see those amazing treats as the perfect meal for themselves as well, and would love to get into it right away if given the chance. This means you need to find some ways to guard you garden from this pesky critter or you will find that your delicious fruits and vegetables have been picked over and all you have left are scraps and leaves.

The first place to start is with a fence. Understand that squirrels can climb well and they can dig, so a fence that is built along the ground and is only three feet high is nothing but an obstacle course to a squirrel. You need to build the fence so that it is at least 12 inches below the surface. This will keep them from digging underneath your fence. You will also want to ensure that you put rocks along the fence line to make it more difficult to dig.

The fence needs to be at least four feet tall and have no gaps in it. These critters can just jimmy their way through any open area so you have to make sure that each piece is tight against every other piece. Also the wood should be as smooth as possible so the squirrel cannot get any grip on it to try to climb up it.

Using poisons in your garden is a bad idea because you may actually make yourself sick. This should be avoided at all costs.

However, repellants are a good idea. There are commercial brands you can buy or you can make your own and they will act as some deterrent against the squirrels. Understand that this only works in conjunction with a good fence, and not should be your primary line of defense, or you are going to lose.

Also consider if possible putting a small electrical wire along the lower part of your fence that has a low current charge. This will cause a small shock to hit the squirrel and that should cause it to run away and not return. Make sure that it is not too severe so that other animals are not injured by it, like your cat or dog.
