Columbia Critter Tip of the Month

Rat Trapping: How To Trap a Rat - First of all, you must take care of all entry points, where rats are coming into your home. There is absolutely no point in placing traps, if you don't seal off all the places where rats might enter. Otherwise they will just keep on coming and another thong, when all holes are blocked the pests inside will be much easier to catch. Seal them in and trapping will be done in a few days.

We should mention which traps can be used: Snap traps, Live cage trap, Glue board traps

Please, don't use glue board traps. It is the least humane of any trap. It can't be reused and there is no guarantee the rats will get caught. This trap is closer to a torturing device than an actual trap.

Live cage trap can be used to trap rats. However, if you don't check the trap at least twice a day the little creature inside might and will die of stress exhaustion. There are some other facts to reconsider if trapping rats with live cage traps. Say, you catch a rat and you want to relocate it to a more suitable surrounding. You need to keep in mind that rats are very attached to their surroundings; they rarely leave nests for more than 100 feet. If they can't get what they need within a fairly small area, they don't survive. Rats that travel around are more likely to get killed by predators and other rats. They live in territories and any newcomer is treated as a threat. They aren't welcomed, they just get killed. So this is also the fact; the rat won't last without its own nest and will definitely die in the next 48 hours. That is why as brutal as it may seem the best trap to use, when catching the rat is a trap snap. Relocation won't work it will just postpone suffer and inevitable death. In this case instant kill is the best solution. Live cage traps are also not as efficient as trap snaps, while they are too big to fit the gaps where rats live.

As horrible as it sounds, when trapping the rats snap traps are the best solution. You can place them anywhere due to their construction and reuse them several times. One of the best baits for these pests is a peanut butter, however if you got the right location, the bait doesn't make any difference. Usually you don't need any bait at all. The right method how to catch a rat is; seal off all entry points, find the right location and set the snap trap.
