When this occurs the most likely cause is that the raccoon has not been able to find food at night and is forced to adjust its schedule to look for food for its very survival. If a raccoon does not eat for a few days it can be very serious. This is why they head out to look for food in the daytime.

Of course this can be very dangerous. Predators can see them much more easily. In fact, the number of predators increases sharply because there are some animals who hunt during the day that would see the raccoon as a tasty meal for a day or two. The raccoon would much rather sleep the day away and just come out at night to find its food.
