Charlotte Critter Tip of the Month

Is a raccoon that is active during the daytime rabid? Raccoons are some of the peskiest creatures around. They get into your garbage cans, garden, and even into your house if given the chance. Once there they can create a lot of havoc. They are messy animals, who will tip over and raid anything they can find looking for food.

You may wake up many mornings to find that your garbage cans are knocked over or your garden is torn up and wonder why you never see these creatures out and about during the daytime. Why is it that they always make these messes at night? That is a good question.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, which mean that they sleep during the day and are awake at night. In fact, a raccoon can sleep as much as 14 hours a day, basically sleeping the whole day away.

The reason that raccoons hunt at night is quite simple. They do not have particularly good eyesight, so if it is dark and limiting the vision of other animals this is creating an equal playing field for the raccoon. They benefit from the fact that they have a great sense of smell and can perceive noises much better than most other animals. This allows them to forage at night for food while avoiding the dangers of predators.

At night time they head out of where they are nesting to begin their search for food. They will wander until they come across a good food source, or until they realize that it is getting close to daylight and they need to head in for the day.

It is possible for you to see a raccoon wandering about during daytime. When this occurs the most likely cause is that the raccoon has not been able to find food at night and is forced to adjust its schedule to look for food for its very survival. If a raccoon does not eat for a few days it can be very serious. This is why they head out to look for food in the daytime.

Of course this can be very dangerous. Predators can see them much more easily. In fact, the number of predators increases sharply because there are some animals who hunt during the day that would see the raccoon as a tasty meal for a day or two. The raccoon would much rather sleep the day away and just come out at night to find its food.
