Boston Critter Tip of the Month

How do you remove a raccoon stuck in a dumpster? So it is early at your work or late and you are going out to throw away the garbage from the day or the previous day and you find that inside your dumpster is an unwelcome guest. No, it is not a hobo making a home in the dumpster. It is a raccoon that has got into the big garbage bin, and has not figured out how to get out. Now you wonder what to do.

That raccoon is not getting out on its own it is clear, and if you leave it in there it is going to die. Eventually the garbage collector is going to come and pour the garbage into the truck, compress that load, and you are going to have raccoon pancake. No one wants to see that happen.

You also can't simply reach into the dumpster to get it out. This is not a stray cat. This is a wild animal that is incredibly dangerous when it is panicking. If you try to grab it you are likely to get bit or scratched, and since raccoons carry so many diseases this can be very dangerous to you. So what do you do?

You can call animal control and have them come and collect it. Most counties or cities offer a service to come out and collect wild animals, and since raccoons are so dangerous to the health of those they come in contact with your local animal control is very likely to come and get the animal for you. Problem solved.

The issue may be that they may not be able to come out right away. If it is a weekend no one may be available to come out, so the raccoon would have to stay until at least Monday, and if your garbage people come on Monday morning that may be too late.

There is a simple solution that can be quick and leave you with no need to come in contact with the raccoon. If you simply pile the garbage at one end of the dumpster, eventually the raccoon is going to be smart enough to climb on top of the garbage until it reaches the edge and then climb out and run away. Just make sure that the amount of trash you put in is sufficient to reach the lip so that it can get out. Sometimes it doesn't take a big fancy solution to get the job done.
