Baltimore Critter Tip of the Month

How to Get Rid of Rats - Rats are very intelligent animals and will put up quite a resistance to our attempts of getting rid of them. They live in nests and human settlements are the best areas to build them. Rats look for places where food, water and shelter would be easy to obtain.

While fencing our yard and larger area around the house against rats would be quite a challenge. Regular fences are not enough; they have to be high enough and fully made of stone or metal, while rats can chew through almost anything. Maybe it's better to make our surroundings as uninteresting as possible for the pests.

We need to prevent them to get in contact with food, water or possibility to build a nest. Trash cans have to be tightly closed, no reachable food around the house. Pet food and bird food should be properly stored. Composting must be monitored and adjusted. Fallen fruit and vegetables picked up on a regular basis.

In order to successfully defend ourselves from rats we need to remove access to a shelter. House must be thoroughly inspected and repaired. Every hole or scratch from top to bottom should be fixed so no rat can enter the building.

To prevent entering our premises some repellents might be used as well. Rats don` t like the smell of mint and peppermint oil, citronella plants in the garden, moth balls and ammonia. However, repellents effect is quite poor and ineffective in the long run. The most effective repellent we could use are our pets. Cats and dogs represent a big problem to rats. Especially cats, which are the predator rat fears the most.

However, if rat somehow finds a way to the house and builds the nest inside, some heavier measurements need to be taken. As there is really only one right possible and humane solution how to get rid of rats, we need to get some snap traps for killing the rats. Live cage trap and relocation don't save the rat, it dies in the next 48 hours, if it is removed from their nest area. First and the most important step are finding the place of entrance and sealed it off completely. Then we have to establish the path of rat's movement and place the snap traps exactly on this path where rats move frequently. Rats get caught regardless the bait, it doesn't matter if we put anything inside the trap. The most important is location where the trap was placed. After the rat has been caught its carcass must be properly disposed. Even though snap trapping might seem brutal, it is the quickest and the most humane solution how to get rid of rats.
