Austin Critter Tip of the Month

What is a raccoon's mating habits? The mating habits of the raccoon can be an interesting study for those looking to find out more about these pesky animals. Interestingly enough, how raccoons know when it is time to mate is because the day begins to last longer starting in January through March. While not all raccoons hibernate, all see this time as a sort of call to prepare for mating.

When it is time to mate the males will become restless and begin to wander outside of their normal living area looking for a female to mate with. The normal courting period for a male is three to four days. After that four day period the female is ready for conception. Once the female is made herself available the raccoons will mate with one another for several nights in a row. This mating process can last up to an hour at a time, with much of that time being spent of foreplay of some kind.

During the daily sexual encounters, the male remains around the female during their mating time. When they awaken they may forage together for a brief time, but will return to their nesting area to begin the hour long time of intercourse. It is a lot more loving (if we can use that word) than many would suspect, and the female is treated with a sense of adoration by the male during this time. This is not the typical mating relationship you would see with many other types of animals.

Even those that are considered the weaker males in an area are given the opportunity to mate. The stronger males are unable to mate with all the females in an area, giving the weaker males a chance to find a female to mate with.

There are instances where the mating period does not take hold, and the female does not become pregnant. In some instances the female loses her offspring long before they were to be born. In these cases the female is able to conceive about 100 days later.

The gestation period is about nine weeks long, but can last up to 10 weeks. Typically a litter of raccoon babies (kits) is between 2-5, with the average depending upon the region they are born. Southern raccoons traditionally have smaller sized litters while northern litters average about 4.5 babies per litter. It is believed that the larger litters are due to decreased temperatures in the winter time, so there is a need for larger litters to keep the population high.
